Tokens are items that can be accumulated and exchanged for reinforcers called backup reinforcers. A program in which one can earn tokens following specific behaviors and can cash in the tokens for backup reinforcers is called a token system. For example, a teacher might implement a token system in which a child can earn one sticker for each correct answer during a teaching session. At the end of the session, the child might be allowed to cash in the stickers for backup reinforcers. For example, the child might be allowed to pay 5 tokens to play a computer game, or to eat favorite treat, or to watch a video. (From Chapter 3 of the DTT Manual)
